OneDrive for Business - Sync Client

Using OneDrive for Business Sync Client on a Barry U PC

No Internet? No Problem. Files you save to OneDrive for Business are available online and offline on your pc.  That you can add files and folders to OneDrive automatically from your PC without having to go to the OneDrive for Business website. You no longer need to email files to yourself or carry around a USB flash drive. You can add files already on your PC to OneDrive by moving them from your my documents folder (or any other folder) to your OneDrive – Barry University  folder.

Verify OneDrive is running

Look for the OneDrive app in your computer system tray.  When you place your mouse over the OneDrive icon will see the app connective status.

  • If your icon is grey , OneDrive is Not signed in.  Sign in with your email and password, see Setup OneDrive for the first time process below.
     
  • If your icon is blue , OneDrive is running, connected and no synch issue.
  • If you do not see an icon, you will need to submit a ticket to the IT Support Desk.

 

Setup OneDrive for the first time

If the icon is grey left click on the icon and Sign in.

 

Enter your email address and click Sign in.

On the login page enter your password and click Sign in.

When you see This is your OneDrive folder click Next.

If you receive an alert indicating Files already exist in this folder choose Use this location.

When you see Welcome to OneDrive click the arrow to view the available tips.  At the end you will see Open my OneDrive folder button. If you click the button or close the window your OneDrive folder will open. 

Moving local PC files and folders using File Explorer

When you move files and folders to the OneDrive – Barry University folder you are keeping a copy of the file on your pc and it will also sync a copy to the cloud for you to later access from anywhere on any device.

To move files to OneDrive for Business using File Explorer, just simply click the file from its original location and drag it into the OneDrive – Barry University folder.

Create a folder

Creating a folder in OneDrive for Business is the same as creating a folder on your PC.

In the OneDrive – Barry University folder  , located in the file explorer, simply right-click and select New Folder.

Save to OneDrive

When you're opening or saving an Office document, your screen will look similar to this:

Deleted Files and Folders

When deleting files on OneDrive for Business from your BarryU PC, simply right-click the file or folder and select Delete.

All items that are deleted from the OneDrive for Business – Barry University folder on your  PC will relocate to your Recycle Bin imgres.

Sync everything within OneDrive or Specific Folders to BarryU PC

Once you have files and folders on OneDrive, you have the option to sync selective folders to your PC.

1. Right-click on the OneDrive for Business icon in your taskbar.

2. In the Dialog window select the Account tab and select Choose folders.

3. You will see a list of folders that are currently in your OneDrive for Business cloud storage. Check the folders you want to sync to your PC and uncheck the folders you do not want to sync to your PC. Once complete click OK.

 

Verify that my OneDrive for Business folder is up to date

File Explorer icons show you the sync status of your offline folders and files

·         Image of sync icon It’s in sync with online version.

·         Image of syncing icon It’s getting in sync.

·         Image of out-of-sync icon The version on your PC is out of sync. To find out why, go to the right side of the taskbar, right-click (or press and hold)OneDrive Image of  icon, and select View sync problems.

1.    When transferring files to OneDrive for Business you may encounter a file or folder with a red x on the icon Image of out-of-sync icon or receive a notification on the task bar. This is a clear indication that there are sync issues.

2.    To address the issue, right click on the file with the error, select View sync problems or click the notification.

     3. You will then receive a pop up that notifies you of why the file or folder was flagged with an error. Some may be due to file size, file extension limitation, etc.


          In this case the file name has a #, which is a restricted file name character. Renaming the file without the # will fix the issue.

     4. Once resolved, the OneDrive for Business Sync Client will continue syncing the rest of your files to the OneDrive for Business Cloud.
