Connecting to a network/department shared drive

When off campus, a high speed internet connection is recommended for accessing a department shared drive.  When trying to access a department shared drive from home, you first need to connect to the network using a virtual network connection (VPN).

On a Windows PC

Method One

1. Right-click on the Computer icon and select Map Network Drive.

2. From the drop-down menu, select the "Drive" letter that you want to assign to the network/shared drive.

3. In the Folder field, type the path of the network/shared drive (for example, \\barryu\doit).

  • Make sure there is a check in the Reconnect at logon box so that the computer reconnects to the network/shared drive whenever the PC is logged in
  • Click Finish when you are done

Method Two

1. Click Start and on the Search programs and files box, type Run.  Press Enter on the keyboard.

2. On the Run box, type \\barryu and then click OK.

3. From the list of folders displayed, select your department folder and right-click on the folder and select Map network drive.

4. From the drop-down menu, select the "Drive" letter that you want to assign to the network/shared drive.

  • Make sure there is a check in the Reconnect at logon box so that the computer reconnects to the network/shared drive whenever the PC is logged in
  • Click Finish when you are done

On an iMac/Macbook

1. Click on the Go menu and then click on Connect to server.

2. On the Server Address field, type smb://barryu/sharedname (for example, smb://barryu/doit).

  • Click on the "+" (plus sign) to add the network/shared drive to the Favorite Servers list
  • Click Connect when you are done

3. When prompted, enter your username and password.  Click Connect.

4. To reconnect to a network/shared drive, click on the Go menu and then click on Connect to server.  The network/shared drive should be on the Favorite Servers list.  Click on it to select it and then click Connect.  When prompted, enter your username and password.
