Email Content Best Practices for Deliverability and Avoiding Spam Filters

  • Avoid overly promotional language. Terms like “Buy now,” “Limited time,” or “Free” can trigger spam or promotional filters, especially in Gmail. Use persuasive language without sounding like an ad.
  • Limit the number of links and images. Too many can make your message appear spammy. Focus on one primary call-to-action (CTA) and link to a webpage for additional content or visuals if needed.
  • Personalize the content. Refer to the recipient by name and tailor the message based on previous interactions or known preferences. Higher engagement leads to better inbox placement.
  • Align your subject line with the message content. Misleading or “clickbait” subject lines can hurt open rates and increase spam complaints. Be clear and honest about what’s inside.
  • Provide clear, relevant value. Make sure every email answers the recipient’s unspoken question: “What’s in it for me?” Content should be useful, timely, and relevant to their interests or needs.
