Online Course Development Process
Faculty Guide | Updated May 20, 2026
Purpose
This guide explains how faculty can convert an existing face-to-face course to an online format at Barry University. It covers who is eligible, what is required before development begins, and what to expect during the two-phase development process.
This guide addresses course-level conversion only. Program-level online approval is a separate process.
Before You Begin: Governance Requirements
Which courses need Council approval?
Existing face-to-face courses can be converted to online format without Council approval.
Entirely new courses (not currently listed in the University catalog) must receive University Council approval before online development can begin.
Prerequisites: What You Need Before Submitting
The following must be in place or actively in progress before your course can enter the development queue:
- Online Teaching Certification
You must hold the Barry University Teaching Online Certificate or be currently enrolled in the program before your course can be developed. Prior certification from another institution may be accepted. Please include the information in the form you submit.
- Chair and Dean Approval
Please make sure you have approval from your Chair or Dean before submitting the form. Barry Online will route the development contract form to the department chair you designated when filling out the form and the Dean.
- Commitment to Quality Standards
Faculty agree to develop courses that meet the minimum standards of Quality Matters Rubric and any applicable departmental or university guidelines.
Submitting the Online Course Development Form
To begin the process, complete the Online Course Development Form.
- Submit your form at least 12 weeks before the intended start term. Development typically takes 6–12 weeks and includes design, review, revisions, and certification.
- Courses are prioritized based on program need and enrollment schedules. If your course is part of an approved online program, it will be given priority in the development queue. If not, it will be added to the schedule as capacity allows, and you will be notified of your placement.
Phase 1: Development Cycle Confirmation
Once your form is submitted and approved, Barry Online will initiate the development cycle. Here is what happens and what is expected of you:
Barry Online Action:
- Barry Online reviews your submission and confirms your place in the development queue based on program need and enrollment schedule.
- A Master Online Course Shell is created in Canvas for your course.
- Your assigned instructional designer sends a welcome email with next steps and timeline.
- You are enrolled in the Online Course Development Resource Portal, which contains tools, templates, and guidance for online development.
Phase 2: Instructional Design and Quality Review
Once the development cycle begins, your instructional designer will guide you through the design and review process. The full development window is typically 6–12 weeks and includes design, revisions, and final certification.
Faculty Responsibility:
- Collaborate with your instructional designer to build out course content in Canvas and design your course to meet quality standards.
- Confirm the course syllabus meets Barry’s syllabus standards in coordination with your Department Chair and Dean. Online courses should use the native Canvas syllabus tool.
- The online version of your course must meet the same learning objectives listed in the catalog and in the in-person version, including the required contact hours for the number of credits offered.
- Ensure your Teaching Online Certificate is completed (or equivalent from a prior institution).
Barry Online Team:
- Instructional designer and internal review team verify the course meets the minimum standards of Barry’s Quality Design Rubric.
- Barry Online confirms completion of Teaching Online Certificate or equivalent.
Once all criteria are met, Barry Online certifies the course for offering and submits courses to undergraduate or graduate council as an information item. Once accepted it triggers the confirmation that initiates your development incentive contract.
