Overview
Cross-listing is now managed through Colleague rather than through manual changes in Canvas. This approach supports more consistent enrollment handling and reduces the risk of grading or access issues.
System of record: Colleague is the source of record for course cross-listing. Updates entered there are reflected in Canvas automatically.
Cross-listing requirements
The following requirements apply when cross-listing courses for an upcoming term.
Required guidance
- Cross-list BEFORE importing content: Cross-listing must be completed before you begin adding materials to your course. If a merge is processed after you have already imported content, that work will not automatically transfer and will need to be manually moved to the new primary course shell.
- Complete all cross-listing BEFORE the term starts: Course cross-listings must be finalized in Colleague prior to the first day of the term. If a course is cross-listed after the term begins, students may lose access to assignments or work already submitted.
- No manual cross-listing in Canvas: Courses should not be manually cross-listed directly in Canvas. Manual changes in Canvas can bypass institutional workflow and create downstream issues.
- DO NOT uncross-list a course: Once the term is underway, cross-listings should not be broken or separated because doing so will affect student enrollment, grades, and course continuity.
Cross-listed course title examples
