Prevent power save mode from turning off WIFI adapter

Most current laptops allow you to conserve battery life by turning off power to various parts of the computer, including the wireless adapter.  However, this feature can cause your wireless to disconnect when your computer is running low on power.

To disable the power-saving on your wireless adapter, try the following steps:

  • Click Start, type Device Manager, and select it from the list.
  • Expand the Network adapters list (if it isn't already expanded), and look for your wireless adapter name.
  • Double-click the wireless adapter name in the list to open it's Properties window.
  • Click the Power Management tab (if this tab is not shown, your computer does not turn off power to the wireless adapter).
  • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power to make sure your wireless adapter stays power on.
