Password Policy

New Password Policy

As a National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) Champion, Barry University is dedicated to promoting a safer, more secure and more trusted Internet.  A new password policy for the University was recently approved, and the new policy will go into effect Wednesday, October 11, 2017 as part of the Cyber Security Awareness Month activities.   The next time you are required to reset your password on or after October 11 you will need to follow the new policy.  To view the new password policy, click here.

If you have not reset your password since May 2017, we strongly recommend you do so before October 11, following the new password guidelines found here.

What does this mean to me?
On October 11, 2017, four major changes go into effect:

  • Security questions and answers required for all accounts - users who have not setup their questions and answers, will be prompted to do so the first time they access commonly used sites on/after October 11th.
  • At least one special character required for new passwords (for example, !$%^&*()_+|~-=\`{}[]:";'<>?,/).
  • Minimum password age will be one day.
  • Passwords will expire every 180 days.

Security questions and answers
If you have already setup your security questions and answers, then nothing changes.  If you have not setup your security questions and answers, the first time you access one of our commonly used sites (such as Workday, Canvas or Webmail) on or after October 11, 2017, you will be prompted to select 3 security questions and provide 3 answers before you can access the resource.  If you haven’t setup your security questions and answers, we strongly encourage you to do by clicking here and following the steps.

Special characters
All new email/account passwords will require at least one special character (for example, !$%^&*()_+|~-=\`{}[]:";'<>?,/).  This is in addition to previous password requirements.  Click here for full details on strong password requirements.  Using a passphrase is highly recommended, as it’s easier to remember (for example, TheTrafficeOnI95WasB@dThisMorning!).

Minimum password age
The shortest amount of time that a user can reset their password via the self-service portal ( will be one day.

Password expiration
With stronger policies in effect, passwords will not need to be changed as often.  Therefore, the password expiration period will be extended from 90 days to 180 days.

Any individual suspecting his or her password may have been compromised shall change it immediately by visiting and report the incident with detailed information to the Information Security Office (
